How to Maintain a Ceramic Coated Car in Auckland

Getting a ceramic coating applied to your car is one of the best investments you can make in its long-term appearance. But a coating is only as good as the maintenance behind it. Done right, your car will look sharper for longer, clean up faster, and resist the kind of surface damage that builds up on unprotected paint over time.
As a Gtechniq accredited applicator in Auckland, we've put together this practical guide based directly on Gtechniq's own care recommendations — plus a few things we've learned working in Auckland's specific environment.
What Changes After a Ceramic Coating
Before getting into the how, it's worth understanding what you're working with.
Gtechniq's coatings create what they call Smart Surfaces — harder, slicker, and significantly more resistant to contamination than bare paint. Dirt, water, and brake dust have less to grip onto, which means your car stays cleaner between washes and takes less effort to clean when you do wash it.
The coating doesn't make your car maintenance-free, but it makes maintenance noticeably easier.
Washing Your Ceramic Coated Car
What you'll need
Gtechniq G-Wash shampoo
Warm water
Three buckets (wash, rinse, wheels)
Two microfibre wash mitts (one for bodywork, one for wheels)
Gtechniq MF2 or MF4 drying towel
The right process
Rinse first, always. A dry wipe of any kind — even a soft cloth — can grind surface grit into your paint. Rinse the car thoroughly before touching it.
Wash out of direct sunlight. Shampoo drying on warm paint leaves water spots and residue that are harder to remove.
Work top to bottom. Start with the roof, bonnet, and boot, then work down the sides. Rinse your mitt in clean water regularly as you go — this releases the dirt and grit your mitt has picked up before it has a chance to scratch the surface.
Do the wheels last. Brake dust is one of the most abrasive things you'll deal with in a car wash. Keep a separate mitt or sponge exclusively for wheels, and always do them after the rest of the car.
Dry with a microfibre, not a chamois. Leather chamois are too harsh for modern clear coats — they'll leave fine scratches over time. A quality microfibre drying towel like the Gtechniq MF2 or MF4 is far more absorbent and considerably softer. When drying, lay the cloth flat on the surface and pull it toward you rather than scrubbing.
Auckland-Specific Considerations
Auckland's climate creates a few challenges that are worth accounting for in your maintenance routine.
Bird droppings are a genuine risk. Our native birds — and the imported ones — are active year-round. Bird droppings are acidic and can begin etching into a clear coat within hours in direct sunlight. Remove them as soon as you notice them using plenty of water to soften the deposit first. Never scrub dry droppings directly off the paint.
Tree sap and bug impacts. If you park near trees or drive on the motorway regularly, you'll pick up sap and insect residue. Same rule applies — soften with water first, don't scrub.
Salt air near the coast. If your car lives near the Hauraki Gulf or anywhere along Auckland's coastline, rinse it more frequently than the interior suburbs. Salt accumulation accelerates surface contamination and can work its way into any unprotected areas.
Maintaining the Hydrophobic Effect
The water beading and sheeting you'll notice on a freshly coated car comes from the hydrophobic (water-repelling) layer in the coating. Over time, environmental exposure can reduce this effect — the underlying protection remains intact, but the beading can soften.
To restore and extend the beading, Gtechniq recommends using Gtechniq C2 every two months. Simply spray onto the paint surface and wipe off the residue with a clean microfibre cloth. C2 works on top of your existing ceramic coating (C1 Liquid Crystal) to reactivate its hydrophobic properties and extend the life of your sealant.
This is a quick job — most cars take under 30 minutes — and it's one of the highest-value maintenance steps you can take between professional details.
Swirl Marks and Surface Damage
Swirl marks — the fine, spider-web-like scratches visible in direct sunlight — are almost always caused by washing technique rather than the product quality. Scrubbing with too much pressure or using the wrong materials are the main culprits.
One of the practical benefits of a Gtechniq ceramic coating is that it eliminates the need for harsh scrubbing. The surface is slick enough that contamination releases easily with minimal effort. Work gently, use proper products, and swirl marks are largely avoidable.
If you do notice swirl marks building up, Gtechniq W2 is a targeted product to address isolated problem areas. For anything more significant — or if the coating itself has accumulated surface wear — bring the car in for a professional maintenance detail.
Annual Professional Maintenance
We recommend an annual professional maintenance service for any ceramic coated car. This isn't just about cosmetics — it's about preserving the coating's integrity and extending its service life.
