Why Some Marks Won't Come Out After Paint Correction

It's one of the most common questions I get after completing a paint correction: "There are still a few marks there — why couldn't those come out?"

It's a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer.

What Paint Correction Actually Does

Paint correction — sometimes called cut and polish — is the process of removing a controlled layer of your car's clear coat to eliminate surface defects like swirl marks, fine scratches, water etching, and oxidation. The defects don't disappear; they're levelled out by removing the paint surrounding them until the surface is flat and uniform again.

This is what gives a corrected car that deep, glassy finish. Light reflects cleanly off a flat surface. Defects scatter light, which is why scratched paint looks dull.

The key word in all of this is removing. Every pass with a polishing machine takes off a small amount of clear coat. You only get so much of it — and once it's gone, it's gone.

So Why Are There Still Marks?

When I carry out a paint correction job, I'm working through progressively finer compounds and polishes to remove as much surface damage as possible. Most marks — the majority of swirl marks, light scratches, and surface etching — will come out entirely.

But some marks are deeper than others. A deep scratch that has cut through the clear coat into the colour coat beneath it cannot be polished out — polishing would simply remove the surrounding clear coat until you've exposed more of the problem, not less. Similarly, some marks in older or thinner paint require a level of correction that would remove more clear coat than is safe to take off.

Could I keep going and remove those remaining marks? In many cases, yes. But that's not always the right decision.

The Balance Between Results and Longevity

This is where my approach differs from chasing a perfect result at any cost.

As a coating applicator, I think long-term. My job isn't just to make your car look as good as possible today — it's to set it up to look as good as possible for the next five to ten years. A ceramic or graphene coating applied over correctly corrected paint will protect and enhance that finish for years. But the more I polish, the thinner your clear coat becomes, and a thinner clear coat means less protection, less longevity, and fewer options for correction work down the line.

I'd rather leave a car with one or two deep marks that are only visible in direct raking light — and a healthy amount of clear coat remaining — than chase those marks out completely and leave the paint compromised for the life of the coating.

This is a deliberate decision, not a limitation of skill or product. It's the difference between thinking like a detailer chasing a perfect result on the day, and thinking like a coating applicator building a finish that holds up over time.

What "Correctable" Actually Means

Before any paint correction job, I'll assess the paint and talk through realistic expectations. Not every car is the same:

  • Newer cars tend to have more clear coat to work with, which gives more latitude for correction without compromising longevity.

  • Older or high-mileage cars may have thinner clear coat already — either from previous polishing, environmental exposure, or both. These need a more conservative approach.

  • Deep scratches that catch a fingernail are generally not correctable with polishing alone. They may need touch-up paint or other remedial work before coating.

  • Water etching and bird drop marks that have been left for extended periods can penetrate beyond what polishing can safely address.

Being upfront about this before the work starts is part of the service. There's no value in a quote that promises 100% defect removal on a car where that isn't achievable without damaging the paint.

Cut and Polish vs. Multi-Stage Paint Correction

It's worth clarifying the difference, since the terms are often used interchangeably.

A traditional cut and polish — the kind offered by a lot of panel shops and fast-detail services — is typically a single-stage process. One compound, one pass, done. It removes surface oxidation and some swirl marks, but it leaves behind its own micro-scratches from the cutting compound, and it doesn't refine the finish.

A multi-stage paint correction uses progressively finer products at each stage. The first stage cuts and removes defects. The second (and sometimes third) stage refines and polishes the finish left by the previous stage. The result is fundamentally different — not just cleaner paint, but optically clearer paint that responds correctly when a ceramic or graphene coating is applied on top.

If you're planning to coat your car, multi-stage correction is the right preparation. A coating locks in whatever finish is underneath it. The better the correction, the better the long-term result.

The Right Expectation Going In

Paint correction in Auckland — done properly — will transform the appearance of most cars significantly. The before-and-after difference is dramatic in the majority of cases. But if you're expecting every single mark removed regardless of what it takes, that's not a service I offer, and I'd be doing you a disservice by pretending otherwise.

What I will do is be upfront about what's achievable on your specific car, explain the trade-offs clearly, and make decisions that protect your paint and your investment over the long term.
